Making your own mospot is fun, can be done with local materials, without special tools, and doesn’t have to cost much at all! Don’t know where to start? Making a good mospot is not difficult, but the right choice of material and construction is important.
Every mosspot starts with a pot

While you can basically turn any container into a mospot, there are a few things to consider when picking a suitable base for your mospot project. The container you choose is the one that first catches the eye and will determine the overall layout of your mospot: tall and slender, low and flat, square or round, closed or open, etc.
The layers of a mosspot
There are many different ways to build a moss pot, but if you want a long-lived and healthy vivarium, you need good drainage, a good foundation and the right conditions for your mosses and plants.

Hardscape

Rocks, wood, ornaments, and support materials that provide the theme in your mospot.
Plants
Not all plants are suitable for the environment in a moss pot, and the right choice will ensure long-term enjoyment and minimum maintenance.

Animals

To maintain the ecological health of your mossarium, it is important to provide some beneficial critters. Usually this is in the form of isopods (woodlice) and/or springtails.
This cleanup crew feeds on decaying material and ensure that any fungi, fungi, and fallen leaves do not find a permanent home.
Useful tools
With the right tools, working in small moss pots or through narrow bottle necks goes a lot smoother.
